Building With Timber

Building-with-timberTimber is the only truly renewable mainstream structural building material – there are other examples of products / systems with excellent sustainability credentials, such as strawbale & hempcrete, but they remain expensive and niche products; used mainly in the specialist “green build” sector Timber, however, has been used for centuries as a construction material, and with current environmental concerns (allied with the advent of engineered timber products) its use is on an upward trajectory. All timber procured by Hybrid Build Solutions is certified (PEFC/FSC) as from sustainably managed forests.

Growing trees remove harmful CO2 from the atmosphere – a cubic metre’s worth of softwood timber product (480-500kg) will have removed approximately 800kg / 0.8Tonnes – the oxygen is released and the carbon is sequestered (or stored) within the timber. This process results in 240-250kg of “locked-in” carbon – 50% of the weight of the timber….An entire solid timber superstructure (CLT) can start to have significant volumes of sequestered carbon – an extremely beneficial ‘tool’ when aiming for low carbon / carbon neutral / zero carbon buildings; and a simple alternative to costly, maintenance-heavy renewables.
